Abbey Fellowship, British School at Rome: September – December 2023

I applied for – and was awarded – an Abbey Fellowship in Painting at the British School at Rome in Autumn 2023 in order to research the tapestries of Futurist artist Fortunato Depero.

 I became very interested in Depero’s work when I first encountered it in 2019 at the Barbican’s Into the Night: Cabarets and Clubs in Modern Art exhibition because of his cross-disciplinary approach and use of playful symbols and humour.

The work I produced during this period was very directly influenced by spending time with Depero’s work, which I saw in Rovereto, Florence, Reggio Emilia and Rome.
